At present, many different radiofrequency (RF) evaluation and development kits, boards and platforms that support a variety of radio protocols exist on the market as a result of today’s intense competition. An increasingly popular solution for designing and prototyping is the General Purpose Radio or GPY platform, which has become a common choice for many radio engineers and hobbyists. This article will delve into the GPY application field and working principle, and help readers gain a better understanding of this type of RF development tool.

In terms of application field, GPY boards serve primarily as a platform for rapidly prototyping a variety of embedded wireless applications. Examples include wireless sensor networks, remote control, short-range communications, IEEE 802.15.4 standards, IoT applications, and more. GPY boards are also designed for use in drones, robots, medical equipment, home automation systems, and other similar applications. In addition to their wireless capabilities, several GPY boards can also be used to control low-level timed operations with the ability to measure different types of variables.

The working principle of a GPY board is based on a radio-on-a-chip solution such as the CC2541. This solution contains a low-cost and low-power system-on-chip (SoC) with an ARM Cortex-M0 CPU core as its core. When used as a module, it includes an antenna, I/O ports, a power supply, and other peripherals. In addition, the GPY platform is usually equipped with additional features that include a Real Time Clock (RTC), an EEPROM, a temperature sensor, a voltage regulator, and a temperature regulator. The board also contains several GPIO pins and digital signal processing (DSP) hardware.

The GPY board, when connected to a computer, can be used to execute different types of software programming commands and receive data from other sensors or external sources. The software programming capabilities are made possible by the Cortex-M0 processor, which includes an instruction set designed for ultra-low power applications. Furthermore, the EEPROM and GPIO pins can be used for data storage and interfacing, respectively. The DSP hardware is an optional addition that can be used to provide additional features such as data filtering and processing.

In addition, the GPY boards usually come with integrated radio transceivers for ISM/SRD (Industrial/ Scientific/Medical/Short Rang Devices) purposes. The transceivers are based on 2.4 GHz ISM (Industrial Scientific Medical) band technology and usually support GMSK, FSK, and OOK modulation schemes. The ISM transceivers are capable of sending short range messages less than 1mW to up to 10km depending on the environment. They also have an extended frequency range with selectable centers ranging from 868MHz to 915MHz.

The GPY platforms also include the RF Core, which is a low-level firmware library used for handling the radio interface. The RF Core architecture is based on the Texas Instruments CC11xx family of chips with support for IEEE 802.15.4, proprietary protocols, and ranging algorithms. This library reduces development time by providing an easy-to-use API for sending and receiving packet information and accessing other radio hardware peripherals. The RF Core supports interfacing with several different architectures such as the ARM Cortex-M0 and M3, and other MCUs based on the 8051 and PIC microcontroller families.

Overall, GPY boards are becoming more and more popular as they are highly cost-effective and provide a wealth of features and capabilities. With the integrated ISM transceivers, the user can quickly establish a wireless link for short range communication. Furthermore, the RF Core makes it easy to access the radio interface and other peripheral devices on the board. As such, GPY boards are becoming a popular choice for designing and prototyping a number of different wireless applications.
