Introduction to Gas Discharge Tube Arresters

Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDTs) are devices used to protect electrical systems from lightning-induced overvoltages. The use of these devices is widespread throughout the electrical industry, from domestic and commercial power networks to military and aerospace applications. GDTs are small sealed enclosures that contain a gas-filled tube with a heavy metal electrode at each end. When subjected to a high voltage, the residual gas in the tube is ionized and a spark-over current is initiated. This current is then transferred to the secondary electrode, thus providing an attenuation of the voltage. The capacity of the device to provide voltage attenuation is improved by increasing the number and size of the tubes used.

GTCS35-231M-R05-2 Application Field and Working Principle

The GTCS35-231M-R05-2 is a Gas Discharge Tube Arrester (GDT) manufactured by Arteche GDT Solutions. It is designed for the protection of low voltage power system components such as switchgear, capacitors, and transformers against transient overvoltage caused by lightning strikes or other sources of high surge voltages. The device consists of a heavy duty polythene case containing two metal electrodes, a spark gap, and an air gap filled with a dry noble gas. The two ends of the spark gap are connected to the two electrodes, forming a bridge. When the surge voltage develops in the system, the gas becomes ionized and a spark-over current is created. This current is then directed to the secondary electrode, where it is safely dissipated and the surge voltage is attenuated.The device is also equipped with two additional protective features, namely temperature limitation and peak flowing current limitation. The temperature limitation feature prevents the spark-over current from exceeding a predetermined temperature, while the peak flowing current limitation feature helps to reduce the conduction losses by limiting the peak current in the event of a surge.The device has been tested in accordance with the international standards IEC 60099-4-1:2020, and is suitable for use in both indoor and outdoor environments. It is also UL 94 V-0 flame retardant rated, making it suitable for use in hazardous areas.The GTCS35-231M-R05-2 is an ideal choice for protection of low voltage power systems against transient overvoltages.
