Time Delay Relays

Time delay relays are used in a variety of applications and settings. They are often used to delay the onset of an event or action, or to extend its duration. Time delay relays are also used in the control of motors, and can be used as safety switching devices.

One example of a time delay relay is the H3M-AC120-A. This particular time delay relay is designed for remote operation while providing user selectable time delays. It is an off delay relay with adjustable repeat/cyclic operation, and is rated for voltage and current up to 120 volts and 10 amps.

Application Field

The H3M-AC120-A time delay relay is most suitable for applications requiring time delay and/or cycling operations related to temperature or pressure increase, or fall. It can be used to monitor digital signals, or as part of an energy management system.

The H3M-AC120-A is also suitable for applications such as controlling running time of motor, pumping water, holding features in start-up/shut down operations, mode change-over, alarm input control on/of, lighting control, and controlling a sequence of operations.

Working Principle

The H3M-AC120-A operates on a number of principles. For example, when a start signal is received by the relay, it then activates a red instantaneous contact to stand the load current on. Then, when the relay is activated, a green instantaneous contact is used to delay the complete start-up time.

When the set delay time has elapsed, the green instantaneous contact is deactivated, and the remaining contacts – one red and one black – open and close in a continuous cycle while the relay is energized. As the red contact opens, it allows for complete stop of the load current.

The H3M-AC120-A also has the ability to be used as a time delay unit that can be programmed to start with a delayed timing and then repeat the sequence at user selected intervals. This is achieved by providing a double “T” type contact with the output of the repeat cycle time setting in series with the start signal.

The relay is highly reliable thanks to its self-test feature. While the relay is energized, the internal self-test circuit monitors the relay contacts and will give an alarm signal in the event of a malfunction.

The H3M-AC120-A can be used in a wide range of applications thanks to its versatility – and it has a current carrying capacity of up to 10 Amps, making it suitable for use in applications that require a large current.
