Through Hole Resistors are components used on Printed Circuit Board assemblies in order to control the current flow. They are also used to modify an electrical signal in order to fit it into a specific range of tolerance and to form a voltage divider network. One of the most used Through Hole Resistors in the market is the H416R5BYA.

The H416R5BYA is a 0.5 watt, 5% toleranced resistor. It has a total resistance range of 1 ohm – 1Mohm, along with a maximum working voltage of 500 volts and an ambient temperature of -55 to 150°C. All resistors of this type use a standard four-band color code, however the H416R5BYA is the only one that uses a fifth band for better accuracy.

The possible application fields for this component are almost endless; it can be used in a multitude variety of circuits, being the most popular for medical devices and automotive applications. This is due to the use of its fifth colored band, which further enhances accuracy and stability.

Each of the five bands of the resistor will have associated a value for it – the first two bands represent “significant figures” and the last three bands are the “multiplier” for those figures. This means that each H416R5BYA resistors can have a different value, depending on the color of the bands. For example, a yellow-violet-black-red-orange H416R5BYA resistor will have a value of 470K ohms.

The working principle of a resistor is very simple, by adding resistance to a circuit, a voltage drop will be produced within it. This voltage drop is always inversely proportional to the current that it goes through, being always in a linear relation. This means that if the voltage stays constant, doubling the current flow through a resistor will double the voltage drop across it.

When talking about the H416R5BYA, the same behaviour applies. However, the use of five bands, instead of the standard four, provide an extra degree of precision to the user. This takes what could have been a 10% toleranced component and turns it into a 5% toleranced one. This feature is specially valuable when dealing with high-voltage applications, where even small discrepancies can cause serious harm.

To summarise, the H416R5BYA is a resistive component made for through-hole applications. It is composed of a 0.5W resistor with five color-coded bands which give it a resistance range between 1 ohm and 1M ohms and a tolerance of a 5%. It has a splendid resistance-to-voltage ratio, making it a great choice for any duty, from automotive to medical; its most remarkable feature being the extra-precisive fifth band. As previously showed, the working principle behind this component is relatively simple; current flow is inversely proportional to the voltage drop across it.
