HCPL-063L is an optoisolator consisting of a AlGaAs LED coupled with a silicon photodetector. It is a Logic Output Optoisolator, which means that in normal conditions, the output current is always in the high state (1). Only when the optoisolator detects input pulses, the output will be temporarily in the low state (0).

Application Field

Working Principle

The HCPL-063L optoisolator consists of a gallium-arsenide LED coupled with a silicon NPN phototransistor. When voltage is applied to the LED, it radiates incident light onto the NPN phototransistor. The light is then converted into electrical signals by the phototransistor, thereby bypassing electrostatic interference. When the input (LED) is in the on state, the output (phototransistor) can provide up to 50mA of low saturation voltage. To quickly detect if the optoisolator is in the high or the low state, the VCCO pin should be connected to the common supply voltage.

The logic output of the HCPL-063L is isolated from the input side by both a photoelectric effect and a physical barrier. This means that the input and output are completely separated and the outputs can remain in the high (1) state, even if the input is switched off.

Additionally, the HCPL-063L also includes two additional features, which are the inrush current protection and the device destruction protection. The inrush current protection helps to reduce the risk of over-current damaging the circuit, while the device destruction protection helps to protect the optoisolator from electrostatic discharge (ESD) and other transient voltage failures.
