The HCPL-0314-500E isolator is an optically coupled gate driver that provides galvanic isolation between input and output components for industrial and consumer applications. Therefore, it can be used to isolate high-current load circuits from sensitive low-voltage input circuits. This isolator is also suitable for motor control applications such as high-power drives, regenerating circuits and contactor coils.

The HCPL-0314-500E contains an emitter or LED, which is triggered by an input signal consisting of either a voltage or current applied at the input terminal of the device. The LED then produces light, which is detected by the detector-output side of the isolator, and decoded through a transistor switch.The inputs are, externally, protected against over-voltage transients with a series combination of a TVS diode and resistor. The output voltage is also clamped with a Zener diode.

The isolator is built with a 4 pin package, with two pins dedicated at the input side, and two dedicated to output side. The input side is usually connected to the signal source, usually to ground, the isolated power supply, and in some applications can also be used as a reference voltage. The output side usually consists of a transistor switch, for a low-voltage high-current output.

The HCPL-0314-500E provides isolation of up to 2500V RMS for 1 minute, and has a maximum sink current of 2.5A. It is also made of an IV Package with flanges for mechanical stability and improved thermal performance. It operates at optimum performance at temperatures ranging from -25°C to +80°C, and is designed for a maximum operating temperature of +85°C.

HCPL-0314-500E isolators offer isolation between input and output circuits, and isolates up to 2500V of high isolation voltage to protect the input circuits. The device also offers high-current sink capability of 2.5A and a broad temperature range of -25°C to +80°C. The built-in TVS diode adds surge protection to the input side, while the Zener diode adds output voltage clamping features.
