The HCPL-3150-300E is a high temperature digital isolation gate driver specifically designed for driving power MOSFETs or IGBTs. It features a small size package of 43 mils width, which allows PCB space-saving design.

The HCPL-3150-300E isolator works by using an optically isolated gate drive. This isolator has a photodiode, optically coupled to an LED which is placed on the other side of a PCB board with the remaining components. As a result, an electrical impulse can travel from the LED side to the photodiode side without any actual electrical connection between the two sides. The circuit’s input stage will convert alternate current signals in very small pulsed current, then these pulsed currents will drive the LED, which will further drive the photodiode with a high voltage. Consequently, the photodiode will produce a high voltage pulse which will reach the output side. The output signal voltage is fully dependent of the LED driving current and the photodiode characteristics.

With the isolated gate drive of the HCPL-3150-300E, there is no need for additional drivers when connecting the power stage to the signal conditioning stage and power source. This minimized component requirements, and decreases the need for bulky drivers, by providing an alternate source of isolated power. With the isolated gate drive, there is no electromagnetic noise to disturb other electronic components, and it reduces the chances of component damage in case of a short circuit. Additionally, it eliminates the need of a flyback diode which helps reduce the total cost of the design and increase efficiency.

Given its low cost, temperature range and space saving size, the HCPL-3150-300E is an ideal isolated gate driver for a variety of power converters and switching applications.
