The HCPL-5630 is an optoisolator designed for logic output applications. It provides high-speed operation and isolation between input and output circuits. The HCPL-5630 utilizes a light-emitting diode (LED) and a phototransistor in an optically-isolated package.In its most basic form, an optoisolator consists of a light emitting element (LED) and a light sensing element (phototransistor) which are optically coupled in an opto-isolator package. This package provides the physical and electrical isolation required to eliminate the possibility of noise or voltage levels from the input or output circuits affecting each other.The HCPL-5630 optoisolator is designed for use in logic output applications. It features opto-couples logic outputs with guaranteed high-speed operation and low power consumption. The device is also optimized for 0.5 μsec propagation delay, improving system performance.The HCPL-5630 incorporates a high-speed, low-power phototransistor opto-isolator, which is optically coupled with a high-intensity red LED. The high-speed opto-coupler, when used with an input of 0-5V DC, can switch input signals from low to high or from high to low with no time delay. This high-speed switching can be used to transmit voltage signals or digital logic data between two circuits with isolation up to 2500 VDC.The HCPL-5630 features an input circuit with a low-current LED. With a current of just 2.4mA, this LED allows the opto-coupler to operate on as little as 4mA of power.The HCPL-5630 optoisolator also features a unique overvoltage protection circuit which disables the output transistor if the voltage exceeds 10V, protecting the transistor from damage due to overvoltage.The HCPL-5630 is designed to be compatible with various opto-isolators, including the popular HCPL-460x and HCPL-561x optoisolators.
