An opto-isolator, also referred to as an optocoupler or photocoupler, is an electronic component that provides electrical isolation between two electrically isolated circuits, using light waves as the means of communication. A photodiode, LED or laser diode, are used to provide a means of transmission. The HCPL-7721-300E is a single opto-isolator component which functions as a logic output and provides electrical isolation between two electrically isolated circuits using an LED as a light source.

The working principle of the HCPL-7721 series can be simplified to three tasks: emission, detection, and transmission. The ECPL-7721-300E has an IR source emitting light aimed towards a two-stage detector. This detector contains two phototransistors whose collectors are connected externally. When the IR light source is blocked, the current flow through these collectors is halted. This interruption of the current flow is what creates a digital signal.

The input current of maximum 20mV is applied to the base of the LED during the HCPL-7721-300E’s operation. This input current creates a voltage across the internal phototransistor pair in the range of 0.6-3.5V. If the load is driven by the output stage of HCPL-7721-300E, it can reach a maximum current of 40mA, while the no-load operating current is below 5mA. The circuit of the device is protected against over-current, with the maximum clamping voltage being 60V.
