The working principle of the HCPL-M452 optoisolator is quite simple. Under normal operation, an electrical current is passed through the optoisolator’s two anodes and two cathodes. This current is provided by an external source such as a controller. In response to this electrical current, the IRED will emit a powerful infrared light that is directed towards the Photovoltaic output transistor. When the photovoltaic transistor receives this infrared light, it will generate a voltage that is dependent on the intensity of the light. This voltage will then be sent to the collector pin, thus providing a signal that can be used to control a high voltage circuit such as an electrical relay.

The HCPL-M452 optoisolator is a versatile option for applications such as computerized control, relays, motor controls, and sensing circuits. The optoisolator provides high speed switching with excellent noise immunity, low-cost, and low-power consumption. Additionally, the optoisolator provides optical isolation of up to 5kVrms between the input and output.
