Reed Relays

Reed relays are usually semi-conducting devices built out of a permanent magnet and two contacts enclosed in a case or a sealed tube. The two contacts close on each other when the current is passed through the permanent magnet. Generally the reed relays are used for switching purposes. To understand the working principle of a typical reed relay, let us take the case of a HE721C2410 reed relay.

HE721C2410 Application Field

The HE721C2410 reed relay bears a type number T-R-1405-N. It is a double-pole, double-throw (DPDT) type reed relay used for switching applications of 24-V power. It operates at 16V AC/DC with a load power of 200 W at 240V AC/DC. The HE721C2410 device is suitable for use in normal and hazardous environments. The maximum operating temperature of the device is 85 °C at sea level.

HE721C2410 Working Principle

The working principle of the HE721C2410 reed relay is based on a magnetically actuated switch. When electric current passes through a permanent magnet, its magnetic field induces a force on the reeds, thus triggering the contacts of the switch. The reeds open and close depending on the current through the coil, and switch power is sent to the load. The contact totally opens when no current is passed through the coil, and the contacts are closed when the current passes through the coil.
