The metal contact terminals make contact with the layer of n-type silicon dioxide. At the time when a voltage is applied to the gate terminal, a control current is generated in between the source and drain terminals. This effectively reduces the n-channel resistance which allows the current to flow.

The amount of current flowing through the channel is dependent on the amount of voltage applied to the gate terminal.Thus, relatively low amounts of input voltage results in small amounts of current. At the same time, higher voltages cause higher amounts of current. This phenomenon is also referred to as the gate-to-source voltage (Vgs) control.

In addition to the Vgs control, the HF40PP040C01 can also be used to control the drain-source voltage (Vds) control. This is accomplished by adjusting the amount of current required to switch the device on or off. As a result, by changing the amount of current at the time of switching the voltage can be controlled.
