Diodes - Rectifiers - Arrays are widely used in many applications, from powering consumer electronics to complex industrial applications. They provide an efficient and/or safe way to convert AC power to DC power, allow for rectification of signals, provide blocking and protection functions etc. The HFA140NJ60C is one of the components in this category. It features fast switching, low forward voltage drop and low reverse leakage current plus enhanced values of QRR and dIF/dt.
The HFA140NJ60C is a high speed, low forward voltage drop, high surge current, and low reverse leakage current rectifier array. It consists of four independent double-diode chips configured as two individual full bridges in parallel and encapsulated in an SOT-227 package. Each diode has a fast switch-ing speed making the HFA140NJ60C well suited for high frequency, high power applications such as power supplies and switch mode power converters.
The HFA140NJ60C combines the four fast diodes in a 4 x 4 mm² package, typically used for AC/DC rectification or free wheeling and in combination with an N-channel MOSFET or IGBT for high-frequency inverter switching. The four 200 mA Schottky barrier diodes can be used for ringing-choke or voltage-clamp applications, where high currents have to be driven in fast switching circuits.
The reverse recovery time of the HFA140NJ60C is decidedly better than commonly used rectifier diodes. Because of its low reverse voltage drop, only a small voltage spike occurs when the diodes switch off and generate a very small switching loss and concomitant heat. This makes it suitable for the most sophisticated applications.
The working principle of the HFA140NJ60C is based on the characteristics of a diode. The diode is a two terminal device that consists of a p-doped semiconductor and an n-doped semiconductor. When a voltage is applied to the diode, the electrons in the n-doped material move to the p-doped material. This current flow is known as the forward current. This current only flows in one direction. When the applied voltage is decreased or reversed, the electrons reverse the direction of movement and the current flow stops. This is known as the reverse current. In this way the diode acts like a one-way switch.
The HFA140NJ60C applies this principle to its usage in AC/DC rectification and voltage clamp applications. In AC/DC rectification modes, the diode acts like a one-way switch and allows the current to flow in one direction, blocking the current from flowing in the other direction. It is used to convert AC power to DC power, and the power switch control is provided to enable the current to flow when the desired voltage is reached.
In voltage clamp applications, the HFA140NJ60C provides an ideal circuit protection solution. In this case the diode functions like a short-circuit protector. When the voltage level exceeds the breakdown voltage of the device, the current is blocked from travelling in one direction and the device prevents overloading of the circuit.
