What are high-current limiters (HCL) and how do they work? High-current limiters (HCLs) are designed to protect circuits from extremely high currents and associated surges. They are used to limit the amount of current that can pass through a circuit, even in the event of an over-current surge. This helps minimize damages from excessive current during an overload.

This can be done by adding a resistor with a specific resistance in parallel with the circuit. While current limiting resistors are cheap and effective, their disadvantage is that they have a fixed resistance value and cannot be adjusted.
