What are high-current limiters (HCL) and how do they work? High-current limiters (HCLs) are designed to protect circuits from extremely high currents and associated surges. They are used to limit the amount of current that can pass through a circuit, even in the event of an over-current surge. This helps minimize damages from excessive current during an overload.
The working principle of HCLs is quite simple. When an excess amount of current flows through a circuit, the HCL trips and limits the current to a maximum safe level. This limits the amount of current passing through the circuit, preventing the damaging effects of an over-current surge.
HCLs are available in a variety of configurations. The most common types are fuseholders, shunt trip circuits, and current limiting resistors. Fuseholders are probably the most popular type of HCL since they are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. They are designed to securely hold a fuse in place, allowing the fuse to manually or automatically cut off the power to the circuit when the specified current limit is exceeded. While they are effective at limiting current, fuseholders have some drawbacks. They are not very adjustable, require regular inspection, and the fuse must be replaced if it becomes damaged.
Shunt trip circuits are also a popular type of HCL. They typically consist of a resistor and a relay switching device. When the current limit is exceeded, the relay trips and the resistor absorbs the excess current, limiting the current flowing through the circuit. Unlike fuseholders, shunt trip circuits are fully adjustable, which allows them to be customized to meet the specific needs of the application.
Current limiting resistors are the most simple type of HCL. They work by simply limiting the current by dissipating any excess current as heat. This can be done by adding a resistor with a specific resistance in parallel with the circuit. While current limiting resistors are cheap and effective, their disadvantage is that they have a fixed resistance value and cannot be adjusted.
High-current limiters are important components capable of protecting circuits from excessive current. They come in a variety of configurations, including fuseholders, shunt trip circuits, and current limiting resistors, each of which have their own advantages and disadvantages. When selecting the best HCL for a particular application, it is important to consider the specific requirements of the application and the advantages and disadvantages of each HCL configuration.
