Common Mode Chokes

Common Mode Chokes, also known as Filters, are devices used to isolate electrical noise, or interference, from electrical or electronic systems. Common Mode Chokes, also known as electronic filters, are used to reduce the amount of electrical noise generated by a variety of sources and which can cause interference to adjacent electrical and electronic systems. The HM67-10510LFTR is a type of Common Mode Choke, rated to handle current flows up to 10mA, and rated to provide inductance values up to 100μH with a satisfactory working life. Common Mode Chokes of this type are applied to data lines, motor controllers and power inputs to reduce the amount of input or output noise generated by a variety of sources. Common Mode Chokes are made up of two identical coils of wire, wound around a ferrite core, connected in opposing directions. The reason for mounting two coils is to prevent noise current from flowing around the outside of the coils, allowing only the desired signal to pass through the centre of the coils, i.e. through the ferrite core. The HM67-10510LFTR, when correctly pulled up, provides an inductance of 100μH. This high Value of inductance is necessary to allow sufficient current to pass through the filter to prevent the signal from becoming too noisy or distorted, so as to maintain the desired signal integrity. The common copper wire is wound around the Ferrite core in a ‘bifilar’ or ‘parallel’ manner. Bifilar winding is when two coils of wire are wound on the same core, in opposite directions, with the resulting winding being wound closely together to provide the ultimate in effective signal isolation. When supplied with a constant current, the windings of the HM67-10510LFTR create a magnetic field which resists changes in the current, providing excellent signal isolation. The fact that the HM67-10510LFTR can be operated at 100mA makes it an ideal choice for applications requiring high performance signal isolation, such as data line protection, motor controllers, and power inputs. A further benefit of the HM67-10510LFTR is the ability to mount the Filter on a single printed circuit board (PCB). This allows the filter to easily fit onto boards with limited space.
