The HMC869LC5TR is an active direct RF demodulator designed for use in a variety of communication applications. It is a compact, highly integrated device, combining low noise RF front end circuitry and high performance analog demodulation capabilities with an on-chip Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) for direct digital results. This integration provides excellent linearity, excellent dynamic range, and low noise operation to greatly reduce system cost and design footprint.
The HMC869LC5TR is ideal for analog FM/FSK demodulation, Quadrature Modulation and Digital Signal Processing applications, including Automatic Gain Control (AGC) and Automatic Frequency Control (AFC). It contains several features to support signal demodulation, such as a 16-bit ADC for digital results, dual low-pass filters, peak detector, programmable gain control, quadrature modulator and various other features. It also provides enhanced performance over conventional discrete demodulators with less design and system overhead.
The device features a low noise figure to minimize loss of signal strength in the system, and operates with supply voltages from 2.7 V to 5.5V. It is housed in a 3mm x 3mm, 7-lead surface mount package making it ideal for space limited applications. Also included on the chip is a power down feature that allows the user to shut off the power supply when not in use to reduce power consumption.
The HMC869LC5TR works on the principle of RF signal demodulation. It consists of a receiver chain that takes an RF input signal and converts it to an intermediate frequency (IF). The IF is then converted to a baseband signal by a demodulation system, which is comprised of a low-noise amplifier, baluns, mixers, filters, and buffers. The demodulated baseband signal is then digitized by a 16-bit ADC for direct digital results. The outputs may be sampled directly or filtered by two low-pass filters.
