Optical Sensors Reflective Analog OutputOptical sensors are types of sensors designed to use the optical property of light to interpret, measure or detect a wide variety of parameters. This particular type of optical sensor, the reflective analog output, works on the principle of reflective surface measurement. HOA0708-011 is an example of a reflective analog optical sensor that measures the continuous variation in the reflectance of an object, detecting light reflected from a surface, and producing an output voltage that is proportional to the reflectance. It is designed for use with visible light from a 650 nm laser diode. This is advantageous as lasers are the most sensitive and accurate source of visible light, and the 650 nm wavelength is well suited for sensing a variety of materials, which further extends its application field. This particular device is capable of measuring the reflectance of an object from 0.05% to more than 99.9%.The sensing element of the HOA0708-011 consists of a photodiode, a single deep well, and a phototransistor. In applications with wavelengths other than 650nm, the photodetector can be switched out for one that is better equipped to detect light in the desired range. The die level spectrum response between 500nm to 1100nm takes into account the peak sensitivity wavelength of the device as well as the various sources that operate in this range.The structure of the sensor requires two optical paths to be present: one in which the incident light is detected and another for the reflected light from the surface being measured. Light is emitted from the photodiode to an object, then reflected off that object to the detector, where either the same or different wavelength is detected and converted to a voltage signal. The device converts this signal into an analog output voltage that is proportional to the amount of light reflected off the object. This allows servo control of the output signals to maximize accuracy of the measured results. Because the sensor is designed to detect light at a wide range of distances, it can be used in many applications, with particular suitability for vertically mounted sensing applications. The device is ideal for measuring properties of materials such as thickness, color, and presence. Additionally, the device can be used for applications involving surface finish measurements, motion detection, and laser alignment. It can be used in automated manufacturing processes, robotic assembly lines, and production or measurement systems.
