.ICL7136CPL-3 Application Field and Working Principle
The ICL7136CPL-3 is a monolithic, low power, CMOS 3-channel 8-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a digital thermometer (TM) counter interface to an existing microprocessor bus. The ICL7136CPL-3 is a specialized application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) optimized for use in 8 to 10 bit data acquisition applications. The ICL7136CPL-3 was specifically designed to process and convert multiple analog signals into digital form with greater precision, speed and accuracy than conventional techniques.The ICL7136CPL-3 uses a three-channel A/D converter to allow for simultaneous collection, conversion and storage of up to three analog signals either directly or through the use of multiplexers, counters and PGA switches. The 8-bit output from the three A/D channels can be passed directly to a microprocessor bus or converted to a 12-bit twos-compliment number if required. The signal that is selected by the multiplexers is then fed into one of the A/D channel inputs. The A/D channels then convert the signal(s) into digital form and output it in TTL voltage levels.The thermometer (TM) counter interface used by the ICL7136CPL-3 is a serial output used to stream data from the converter directly to a microprocessor. This reduces the number of communication channels tracks required on printed circuit boards bearing the ICL7136CPL-3 and dramatically increases the speed of data acquisition. The TM counter interface also allows for control of multiple ICL7136CPL-3 units from a single microprocessor.The ICL7136CPL-3 has a wide range of applications in data acquisition systems, process control and automation, and mixed-signal systems. The ICL7136CPL-3 is especially well-suited for applications that require simultaneous acquisition, conversion and storage of multiple analog signals. The ICL7136CPL-3 can also be used in applications where the signal sources vary widely in amplitude, offset and frequency. Furthermore, the ICL7136CPL-3 has a very low power consumption which makes it ideal for portable applications.The ICL7136CPL-3 can operate from either a single +5V power supply or a +5V/+12V power supply. The ICL7136CPL-3 also incorporates a number of on-board power saving features such as a power down input, an autostart standby mode, and autocalibration of the A/D channels on power-up.In summary, the ICL7136CPL-3 is a low power, high performance, three-channel 8-bit analog-to-digital converter with a digital thermometer counter interface.
