The ICL7631ECSE+ is a high-performance, low-power, rail-to-rail, single-supply, CMOS operational amplifier (op amp). It is designed as an instrumentation amplifier, which uses both current feedback and voltage feedback internally to achieve excellent gain accuracy and stability. It is widely used in various linear amps applications, including instrumentation, buffers, and OPamps.

Application Field

The ICL7631ECSE+ is ideally suited for precision measurement applications and instrumentation amplifier, in the field of automation, medical, industrial and test & measurement, discrete and analog systems, etc. It is optimized for low power applications and has a wide input common-mode voltage range of 50mV to VCC-1.6V for rail-to-rail input operation. It requires only 1uA of quiescent current, making it suitable for low-power, battery-powered applications. It is also extremely stable, with a gain drift of less than 2mV/V over temperature.

The ICL7631 features excellent CMRR (Common-mode Rejection Ratio) and PSRR (Power Supply Rejection Ratio), making it suitable for precise instrumentation, as well as buffering low level signals and driving capacitive loads. It also has a wide bandwidth of 2MHz and can drive up to 12mA output current.

Working Principle

The ICL7631ECSE+ is a single-supply, rail-to-rail, CMOS-based op amp with both current feedback and voltage feedback internally. It is designed to operate from a single +5V to +15V supply, drawing quiescent current of 1uA per channel. The current feedback and voltage feedback allow for excellent gain accuracy and gain stability.

Internally, the opamp has two input transistors – one for the input voltage and one for the current feedback. The voltage feedback consists of an amplifier, feedback resistors and compensation components, while the current feedback consists of a current mirror and a resistor divider. The current and the voltage feedback resistors are programmed externally by selecting the appropriate resistors to set the desired gain value. This makes it easy to configure the amplifier for gain ranges of 1 to 100,000.

The current feedback allows for excellent performance with low noise and low distortion. An external compensation capacitor is connected between the output and inverting input of the opamp to maintain good linearity and stability. The current and the voltage feedback resistors along with the external compensation capacitor provide a unique degree of flexibility in setting the amplifier’s gain and performance parameters.

The ICL7631ECSE+ is an ideal choice for low noise, low distortion, low power and high accuracy measurements, as well as for driving capacitive loads. It is ideal for various linear amplifier applications, including instrumentation amplifiers, buffers, OPamps and other precision systems.
