The mixer is used to convert the error voltage generated from the VCO’s phase comparator circuit into an equivalent digital representation. This digital data is used to update the PLL loop filter.The loop filter is the backbone of the device that keeps the loop stable and controls the loop dynamics. It integrates the error voltage from the phase comparator, and then transfers it to the PLL voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The VCO is a type of oscillator which generates the desired output frequency locked with the reference input frequency. The output of the VCO is then fed to the mixer that combines the reference and the output signals to generate the error voltage, which is sent back to the loop filter and PLL for correction.In addition, the device incorporates PLL assist functions to facilitate an optimal design.
