Thyristors - SCRs

Thyristors, also called as Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCRs), are a type of power semiconductor device with three terminals and capable of switching large electrical currents. The ID104 thyristor is a horizontal type SCR, which is widely used in industries related to electrical power and lighting control, UPS and battery chargers, motor speed control, and many other applications. Application Field

Working Principle

The ID104 thyristor is composed of four regions, namely the P-type base, N-type emitter, N-type main electrode, and collector electrode. The main electrode and the collector electrode are equivalent to the emitter and collector of a transistor. A positive gate current is applied between the gate and the emitter to turn on the thyristor. When the gate current is applied, electrons are injected into the main electrode which makes it n-type. As a result, the PN junction between the base and the main electrode breaks down, thus allowing current to flow from the emitter to the collector.As the main electrode gets n-type, it forms a high-speed diode with the base, preventing any further current from flowing from the base to the main electrode. This property is called latch-up and makes the ID104 thyristor an ideal switch for controlling large AC and DC currents. The ID104 thyristor can be triggered by either a DC or an AC source. It can be turned off by reducing the gate current to a lower level or by reducing the output current below the holding current.
