Proximity Sensors
Proximity sensors are used for detecting the presence of material/objects near them without being in physical contact. The range of detection depends on their physical size, type and sensitivity. Proximity sensors are used in many Robotics, Automation and Control applications.

IME30-10BNSZW2S Application Field and Working Principle
The application field of IME30-10BNSZW2S can vary from automotive to medical industries for presence detecting. It is a low-cost, low current, long sensing range self-contained proximity sensing device. It integrates a voltage regulator, an active infrared detector, and an ASIC; all inside a low profile, compact, and sealed shielding cover. It has an adjustable sensing range from 20 cm--100 cm.
This device works on infrared detection principle, in which a transmitter, which can be an LED or laser diode, emits light, the receiver is placed opposite and is capacitive in nature. As the object approaches the area of sensing, the receiver will detect the decrease in the amount of light that it was receiving. IME30-10BNSZW2S detects this change in light and sends an output signal to the user.
These sensors are based on the principle of active infrared technology that uses a pair of active infrared LEDs. The transmitter emits pulse of infrared light in different frequencies towards the target, which is then reflected and received by a detector. This detector is located nearby which analyses the frequency of light emitted by transmitter, compares it with the current frequency of light reflecting from the object and then decides whether to provide or not provide a voltage output.
The technology also uses Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) to measure the distance between the IME30-10BNSZW2S and the object. PFM can be used for precise distance measurements because the higher the frequency of the emitted infrared light, the greater the value the detector reads on the reflected light. The higher the frequency, the more accurate the distance distance measurement result is as the light losses through the environment is reduced.
Also, IME30-10BNSZW2S uses a specific ASICS chip that can detect the presence of objects from 20 cm to 100 cm. The ASICS chip also provides the switching and working mode for the device, which includes a 3 - wire type and 4 - wire type. In the 3 - wire type, the output waveform is either high or low voltage which is expected or given as an input to the electronic circuit. In the 4 - wire type, two separate output waveforms are given.
The voltage regulator helps to regulate the voltage in the device so that the output waveform to the electronic circuit is the expected one. This Voltage regulator can be PFC, PFM or even Step - Down voltage regulators.
