Working Principle

IR3538MTRPBF voltage regulator is designed to operate as a buck converter and offers features which enable efficient and reliable operation in synchronous rectified and diode-emulated buck topologies. It integrates synchronous MOSFETs and power limiting circuitry, which eliminates the need for external protection devices and enables synchronization with an external clock up to 1MHz.

The chip performs voltage conversion by pulse-width modulation (PWM) control of the integrated high-side and low-side MOSFETs. The MOSFETs when paired together can present low on-resistance and low reverse-current. The chip uses an internal clock signal to control the PWM output. The PWM signal is generated based on the input voltage, output voltage and output current.

The output voltage is set using an adjustable voltage divider and monitored by an internally reference pin. The output voltage can be adjusted up to a maximum output of 16V. The circuit also monitors the output to enable current limiting and thermal shutdown. The current sense input is used to detect overcurrent conditions and enable current limit operation.
