IR3847MTRPBF application field and working principlePMIC (Power Management ICs) are integrated circuits used in power management and voltage regulation. Voltage regulators are PMICs designed to convert or adjust the output or supply voltage of a power source in order to optimize the power delivery to a device. DC-DC switching regulators are designed to control and convert the voltage or current of a DC source to the desired voltage or current suitable for a load or a device.IR3847MTRPBF is a very popular DC-DC switching regulator integrated circuit manufactured by Infineon Technologies. IR3847MTRPBF is advanced switch mode synchronous buck regulators and supports 400 kHz, 1MHz, and 2 MHz hf switches. It also features an internal soft start to limit the input inrush current, as well as an internal short-circuit protection. This device is capable of delivering up to 5.0 A continuous output current and its switching frequency ranging from 400 KHz to 2 MHz. It provides a wide supply voltage range from 3 V to 60 V and possesses a maximum output voltage range of 0.8 V to 5.5 V. IR3847MTRPBF has many applications in various fields. It is widely used in battery chargers, DC-DC converters, display backlight applications, embedded systems, power management modules, power supplies, STB/ DVD players, motor drivers, output voltage tracking, phase shifters and voltage replica circuits. The working principle of the IR3847MTRPBF is based on the synchronous rectification technique. It works by directly feeding the high frequency switching signal to the control electrode of the synchronous rectifier. The control signal controls the conduction time of the controlled rectifier and hence regulates the output voltage which is calculated by the feedback pin from the output. Thefigure below shows the basic circuit configuration of the IR3847MTRPBF:As shown in the diagram, the IR3847MTRPBF consists of an error amplifier, a pulse width modulator, an oscillator, a High Frequency (HF) switch, an integrated power MOSFET, and a synchronous rectifier MOSFET.The input voltage is applied to the input capacitor and is then regulated by the error amplifier and the pulse width modulator. The output of the error amplifier is fed to the PWM comparator which compares the feedback reference with the input voltage. Depending on the comparison results, the pulse width modulator will generate pulses of appropriate width. The output of the pulse width modulator is fed to the oscillator causing a high frequency carrier wave to be generated.The high frequency output of the oscillator is applied to the HF switch and the synchronous rectifier. The HF switch will switch the current from the integrated power MOSFET to ground, resulting in the output voltage being regulated by the synchronous rectifier. The synchronous rectifier will be controlled by the high frequency signal, resulting in the output voltage being regulated. The output voltage is then fed back to the error amplifier via the resistor divider network which is used to regulate the output voltage.In conclusion, IR3847MTRPBF is a very useful DC-DC switching regulator that can be used in many applications. It is a very efficient and cost-effective option for power management solutions.
