The IRKU71/04A is a thyristor, also known as a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR). Thyristors are semiconductor devices usually used to control electric current. A thyristor consists of four semiconductor layers, namely anode, cathode, gate, and base. In an SCR, the anode and cathode are the two main terminals, and the gate and base are the control terminals. An SCR is a bidirectional switch, meaning it can pass current in both directions.

The IRKU71/04A is a NPN double-side gate-controlled bidirectional thyristor module. It has a voltage rating of 1200V and a current rating of 4A. It is designed for use in applications where high-power switching is required. The module has two independent bidirectional thyristors, called “T” and “R”, which are connected in series. The T terminal is connected to the anode, while the R terminal is connected to the cathode. The body offers both T and R connections, which provides a pluggable solution for applications with limited space.
The IRKU71/04A thyristor module works by using electric power to control electric current. When a voltage is applied across the main anode and cathode terminals, electric current flows through the body of the thyristor. This flow of current creates a constant electric field at the base of the thyristor, which prevents current from flowing through the gate of the thyristor. When a voltage is applied to the gate, the constant electric field is disrupted, allowing electric current to flow through the gate and into the body of the thyristor. This electric current causes the thyristor to switch on, allowing electric current to flow through the anode and cathode to the load. The thyristor will remain in the on state until the voltage at the gate is removed, at which point the thyristor will switch back off.
The IRKU71/04A thyristor module is suitable for use in a wide range of power control applications, such as motor controls, lighting control, UPS systems and welding equipment. It is also suitable for use in AC and DC circuits. The module is RoHS compliant and UL approved.
