Thyristors - SCRs - Modules: IRKU91/16A application field and working principle

The IRKU91/16A module consists of 16 individual silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR) which are used in various types of industrial applications. The general purpose of using this module is to provide a relatively high power output to switch and control the most common electrical and electronic components, such as motors and lighting fixtures.

An SCR is a voltage-controlled solid-state switch that can be turned on with a pulse of positive bias current. A typical SCR applications include motor control, starting, switching, speed control and reversing, as well as limiting, protection, and time-delay circuits. The IRKU91/16A module is configured to be controlled with a direct current (DC) voltage.

The IRKU91/16A switches are made from a high quality silicon material with a compact dimensions of 4mmx6mmx8mm which is suitable for easy installation in confined spaces. The SCR module also features a low on-state voltage drop and fast switching times for precise control. Due to the reliable nature of the module, it is highly suitable for most industrial applications.

The working principle of an SCR is that it consists of four layers of a semiconductor material, of which the two outer layers contain an n-type impurity and the two inner layers contain a p-type. When a positive voltage applied, it creates an electron depletion region across the junction, giving it a non-conductive state. When the applied voltage is negative, the diode is forward biased, allowing the electric current to flow through it.

Once the gate voltage is over 0.7 volts, the electric current will start to flow through the SCR, which is known as the “turn-on” state. The gate voltage of the IRKU91/16A module can be up to 600V and it can handle currents up to 30A. It also has a high withstand voltage up to 600V.

In order to turn off the SCR, the current needs to be completely cut off, which is achieved by reducing the voltage applied to the gate. This is known as the “turn-off” state of the SCR and the module will break the circuit and the current will not flow. This is particularly important in regulating motor speed, to ensure that the motor is not overloaded and to increase the life span of the motor and other electrical components.

The versatility and convenience of the IRKU91/16A module makes it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications, and its compact size, fast switching times and reliable performance make it an essential component for industrial control, switching and protection systems.
