PMIC - Voltage Regulators - Linear

The IRU1160CPTR is a +5V linear regulator which target applications are consumer electronics and autonomous power supplies. It features a low dropout voltage, extremely low temperature coefficient, an error flag output and an active low reset output. It can deliver up to 1.6A output current and a selectable range of output voltage from 5V to 1.8V with two different options for selection of output voltage. The IRU1160CPTR offers excellent ripple rejection. The on-chip short-circuit protection and thermal shut-down offers an added protection against damage from an overload.

Working Principle

The IRU1160CPTR integrated circuit has two main sections, the control section and the pass element section. The control section of the IC is composed of an error amplifier and a current sensing circuit. The error amplifier takes the reference output voltage of the IC, which is set by the RSET resistance, as a reference voltage, and compares it to the output voltage of the IC. Based on the comparison a voltage at the output of the error amplifier is set proportional to the observed error. This voltage is processed by the control section and it is amplified to deliver the Gate Drive Current to the pass element section.

The pass element section comprises a P-channel MOSFET, which is the main regulator, the current limit resistor, and the over-temperature and Short-Circuit sensing circuits. The driver section utilizes a dedicated MOSFET Driver IC which not only amplifies the gate drive current of the IC but also provides a slew rate control for the MOSFET such that it does not exceed 600mV per microsecond. This ensures that the MOSFET does not oscillate or go into over-shoot.

Fault conditions, such as over-temperature or over-current, are detected by dedicated sensing circuits embedded in the IC and a Low Active reset or Flag signal is asserted to the system. The Low Active reset allows the user to monitor the status of the IC and take appropriate action in case of an abnormal operating condition. The PGOOD signal from the IC indicates that the output voltage is in the specified window.
