ISL6116CB Application Field and Working Principle

The ISL6116CB is a current-limiting hot-swap controller for use within distributed power architectures. It is designed to regulate the inrush current during system power-up and power-down or the insertion and removal of boards in the system with no disruption of the system power rail. During power up, the controller limits the inrush current to a preset level, while during power down it holds the output voltage until the load current is driven below its set limit.

The ISL6116CB sets a limit to the current that it draws during start-up and shuts down the power supply until the inrush current is reduced to a reasonable level. The ISL6116CB has various functional features like adjustable current limiting, externally adjustable power-up and power-down delays, soft start, adjustable under-voltage lockout, over-voltage protection and so on.

The ISL6116CB is mainly used in applications requiring controlled load current from a variety of power sources like rectifiers, battery chargers and AC power sources. It is also suitable for power buses where a sudden change in the power load may cause disruption.

The ISL6116CB operates with a power rail from 6V up to 28V and supports a maximum current of up to 5A. It can be used with a wide range of external components such as shunt resistors, fuses, relays, and TVS diodes. The device is capable of automatically reducing the input current under an overload or excessive input current situations.

The ISL6116CB device has a current sense comparator which controls the external power switch according to the preset current limit. The inrush current is determined by the time constant of the RC circuit consisting of a resistor and a capacitor connected between the power switch and the current sense pin. Once the preset current is reached, the power switch will turn off and then remain off until the load current drops again.

The ISL6116CB supports three operating modes, delay period mode, soft-start mode, and under-voltage lockout mode. In delay period mode, the power will be turned on when the preset delay timer expires. In soft-start mode, the load is supplied with a predetermined current which is gradually increased. The under-voltage lockout mode fails to turn on the power switch when the voltage on the control pin is lower than the pre-set value.

The ISL6116CB is widely used in various applications such as servers, routers, switches, and computing systems. This device helps protect against power convergence, over current protection, input overvoltage protection and inrush current limiting. It also helps to reduce the circuit complexity while providing reliable and efficient power supply.
