The MAX5939RESA is a hot swap controller offered by Maxim Integrated that is designed to ensure a safe startup of an external load on a main supply with a power management unit regulator. The MAX5939RESA offers precise hot swap control in order to maximize reliability and system performance while keeping the thermal stress and surges well under control. The precisely programmed voltage is monitored by the MAX5939RESA, which provides precise current cut off, thus avoiding large inrush or overcurrent. The MAX5939RESA also features a precise undervoltage and overvoltage lockout function for protecting the main supply.
The MAX5939RESA features a scaled voltage ok (Vok) output monitor pin for controlling the enable pin of a downstream regulator. If a supply is undervoltage, Vok will be pulled low, disabling the enable pin of the downstream regulator and protecting both the operating circuit and the main supply from a fault. This helps to ensure system reliability during power-up and power-down transitions.
The MAX5939RESA is designed to be used with a 3.3 V or 5 V main supply and its input voltage range is 2.25 V to 5.75 Vdc. Its PGOOD pin is open drain and can sink up to 2 mA of current at output voltage < 2.4 V. Its VOK pin has an internal pull-up resistor allowing it to be used as a voltage ok indicator. The MAX5939RESA also includes reverse current detection, protection from overvoltages, undervoltage lockout and other features. The MAX5939RESA is available as an 8-pin wettable-flank, SOIC, or MSOP package.
Operation of the MAX5939RESA is controlled by an external voltage-set resistor (Vset). For a given level of voltage, the start-up current limit is set by the Vset resistor. This resistor sets the maximum start-up current, determines when the protection apparatus is activated, limits the inrush current, and protects the main power supply from overcurrents. It also sets the time between the Enable/Disable input and the output turn-on/turn-off.
The MAX5939RESA is preprogrammed with three output voltage levels: 0.985 V, 1.2 V, and 1.4 V. These levels are adjustable via the Vset pin. In addition, the MAX5939RESA includes an internal controlling system that prevents the output from exceeding a maximum peak current limit or a maximum peak load current. The MAX5939RESA additionally ensures the load is disconnected upon the occurrence of a fault.
