ISL6150IB Application Field and Working Principle

PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers - The ISL6150IB is a Hot Swap controller device intended to provide a safe, efficient and reliable method of connecting a load such as a disk drive and other devices to power rails in an intelligent manner. The device applies Hot Swap principles to allow safe connection and disconnection of a load to an active power rail.

The ISL6150IB uses current limiting to protect hot-swap devices from accidental over-current conditions. It also works with a ROHM sub-rail MOSFET to protect the load from occasions of unexpected under-voltage, reverse current, and over-voltage conditions. The current limit threshold is adjustable from 12A to 100A. The device also incorporates a voltage regulator (VTH) for transforming DC voltage to set the voltage for various present-load conditions.

The basic Hot-Swap circuit consists of three components: the start-up circuit (ACT, UART and GATE); the sub-rail protection circuits (R, SENSE, CURRENT and PROTECT); and, the turn-off circuit (LIMIT, VTH, PGOOD and GATE).

The start-up circuit includes the activation circuit (ACT), the uart circuit (UART) and the gate driver (GATE). The activation circuit manages the inrush current of the load to prevent any electrical nuisance. The uart circuit (UART) senses the current on-time from the load and charges the input capacitor (CIN) to a voltage level that is compatible with the main power rail (VIN). The main circuit is “on” when the gate driver detects that the input voltage (VIN) is stable. The sub-rail protection circuits (R, SENSE, CURRENT and PROTECT) are responsible for detecting any abnormal conditions. The resistor (R) senses the output current of the MOSFET, and the sense circuit (SENSE) detects the output voltage. When an overload, reverse current, or over-voltage situation is detected, the CURRENT circuit signals the PROTECT circuit to shut down the power to the load.The turn-off circuit (LIMIT, VTH, PGOOD and GATE) monitors the protection voltage levels. The limit (LIMIT) circuit senses when the output current is approaching the peak current limit (Ipk), and triggers the VTH regulator to reduce the on-time. When the peak current limit is reached, the PGOOD signal notifies the gate driver (GATE) to shut off the MOSFET. The gate driver is also responsible for providing active soft-start and protection against short-circuits and over-voltage.
