ISL61851LIBZ Application Field and Working Principle

The ISL61851LIBZ is an integrated circuit (IC) hot swap controller. It is used for protecting DC power systems by controlling the hot plugging of a power supply, easing the stresses caused by inrush current, minimizing power dissipation and eliminating the need for an external circuit. It is designed as a low voltage hot swap controller, intended to provide safe power supply operations on 3.3V and 5.0V power systems. It has a slew rate of 0.2V/ms and an integrated PMOSFET with a drain current handling capability of up to 4A. When the voltage is stable and the load is up, the IC will turn on the N-Channel MOSFET to allow current to be drawn from the load. In dual phase mode, the IC turns on both P-Channel and N-Channel MOSFETS. This ensures that the load is provided with stable power and that the power supply is given enough time to recover before powering the load.

The ISL61851LIBZ also features a comprehensive range of protections including over voltage protection (OVP), under voltage protection (UVP), and over current protection (OCP). The OVP protection identifies when the voltage at the load exceeds the maximum voltage set by the controller and turns off the MOSFETs to protect the load. The UVP protection identifies when the voltage at the load falls below the minimum voltage set by the controller and turns off the MOSFETs to protect the load. The OCP protection identifies when the load exceeds the current limit set by the controller and turns off the MOSFETs to protect the load.

The ISL61851LIBZ is ideal for a wide range of applications, including personal computers, communications systems, consumer electronics, and automotive. It is particularly well suited for powering high power loads where reliable power sequencing and inrush current protection is required.
