Working Principle

The ISL78171ARZ-T is a synchronous, step-down, DC/DC converter integrated circuit. The device operates from an input voltage range of 2.0V to 6.5V and produces a regulated, fixed output voltage of up to 5V. The device has an integrated power MOSFET, integrated soft-start and current mode drive scheme, and supports a wide range of output current for driving LEDs. The device is capable of providing high efficiencies up to 95%.

The device has control sense comparator to control the on-time of the power MOSFET switch. The power MOSFET switch is switched at a fixed frequency of up to 2.4 MHz determined by an external external resistor. The peak current of the power MOSFET is controlled by an external resistor setting the sense voltage applied to the sense pin. The maximum current through the power MOSFET is limited to 7A. The output voltage of the device is determined by the external feedback resistor connected to the FB pin and is adjusted by the external resistor connected to the ADJ (adjustment) pin. The device is protected from over-temperatur, undervoltage lockout, and short-circuit.
