The ISL79987-EVAL is an evaluation board from Renesas technology that helps demonstrate their high efficiency LED drivers for LED LCD backlighting applications like in LCD TV’s, and Notebooks. The board allows users to analyze the control characteristics and performance of the ISL79987 Zener clamped linear LED driver. The board come with the I2C CAN interface port for programming via the I2C protocol and comes equipped with I/O expansion ports for evaluation and demonstration of the LED driver.

The ISL79987-EVAL evaluation board is equipped with regulated 5V power supply as the board supply design and uses an RGB LED driver system to provide LED color luminance. The board is designed for devices that require input voltage ranges from 10V to 59V, and accepts input current of up to 2.3A. The boards construction allows for many configurations, such as adjustable current output ranges with step sizes of 25 to 675 mA for the ISL79987 device.

The working principle of the ISL79987-EVAL board is to convert DC power into DC current and LED color light from a DC source. The three LED drivers on the board provide variable current levels and proportions of each LED for the respective color light. The I2C CAN interface port enables users to program the current level output of each driver from the main unit. Current feedback is achieved through the ISL79987 devices’s on-board current sensing circuit. The board supports three dimming control methods – 1) Variable ripple PWM, 2) Variable current decrease mode, and 3) Variable current increase mode.

The ISL79987-EVAL board is designed for use in backlighting applications such as in notebooks, cell phones, and LCD TV’s to control and regulate the current/color information output to LED light sources. The board comes with input protection Transil Diodes that are suitable with over voltage protection of 16Vpp, and transient voltage protection of 8V. The board also comes with an onboard LED for visual feedback during board operation.

The ISL79987-EVAL evaluation board is designed specifically for low-side LED driver applications. It comes complete with software, documentation and a backlight emitter with LED connectors, allowing users to quickly evaluate the product in a real world application. The driver on the board implements predictive current loop control along with digital dimming and LED monitoring control features. The board is also designed to operate in environments with high EMI and has integrated protection features to guard against transient voltage and over-current conditions.
