ISL8115FRTZ-T Application Field and Working Principle

The ISL8115FRTZ-T is a Fully-Integrated, Low-Iq Triple Output DC/DC PWM Power Management IC (PMIC) designed by Intersil Corporation. It is a PMIC – Voltage Regulators – DC DC Switching Controllers solution designed to provide a high value, flexible power supply solution in a wide variety of systems requiring high current and voltage regulation.The ISL8115FRTZ-T is a PMIC that provides a highly-integrated and regulated power solution for medium to high-power embedded systems. The PMIC utilizes a fully integrated triple output voltage regulator to rectify a 5V or 3.3V input voltage, and to provide two highly-smooth, regulated output voltages – up to 9.55V – and a regulated system ground. The PMIC also contains a buck controller that provides a third, extremely efficient output voltage.The ISL8115FRTZ-T’s highly integrated triple output voltage regulator provides two precision output voltages – up to 9.55V – with adjustable switching circularity, adjustable soft-start and undervoltage lockout (UVLO) features. This highly integrated regulator is capable of delivering up to 10A of load current. Its advantage is that it can provide an extremely low-noise output and has inherent stability over a wide load range, making it well-suited for many applications where high efficiency, small size and low voltage headroom are required.The ISL8115FRTZ-T also contains a buck DC/DC converter that provides a third PMIC output. The buck controller can deliver up to 4.1A of continuous load current with peak load current capability up to 6.6A. In creating the buck output, an adjustable “on the fly” loop compensation feature is included. This feature allows the user to dynamically adjust the system’s output voltage and current over-current limit during system operation. By providing this level of flexibility, the ISL8115FRTZ-T can cost-effectively accommodate a multitude of different system configurations.In addition to the output voltage selection pins and the buck controller, the ISL8115FRTZ-T contains two additional pins for the input voltage selection, which can be used to select the input voltage supply. This feature allows the user to provide either a 5V or 3.3V input voltage supply to the IC as needed.The ISL8115FRTZ-T also contains several features to provide added system protection. A pre-charge circuit is included to eliminate inrush current upon system power-up, and all outputs have over-current protection (OCP) to limit current in case of overload. The outputs are also protected against over-voltage conditions and the PMIC has adjustable thermal shutdown (TSD) to protect the PMIC against extreme operating temperatures. Overall, the ISL8115FRTZ-T is an attractive solution for medium to high-power embedded systems requiring multiple high-performance regulated output voltages with very low headroom and power dissipation requirements.
