Working Principle

ISL81601FRZ is an Advanced Buck Controller based on a hysteretic-type control scheme. The hysteretic-type controllers rely on the comparator\'s output signal to directly control Power PMOS and NMOS switches. ISL81601FRZ is a voltage-mode switching controller that provides a fixed frequency operating point to switch the NMOS and PMOS. The output voltage of the regulated DC to DC converter is determined by the on-time/off-time ratio of the gate signals of the NMOS and PMOS switches. It can also be adjusted to optimize the converter performance depending on the application requirements.

The control loop of the ISL81601FRZ consists of a voltage loop, a current loop and a frequency loop. The voltage loop is the major loop and provides voltage regulation. It consists of an error amplifier configured in a typical non-inverting configuration. The output of the error amplifier is compared to a reference voltage (VMAX) to generate a control signal for the duty cycle controller. The output of the duty cycle controller is then used to control the switching frequency of the NMOS and PMOS switches. When the output voltage of the DC to DC converter swings above or below the desired output voltage, the error amplifier will adjust its output voltage so that the duty cycle controller can adjust the switch duty cycle accordingly to correct the output voltage.

The current loop of the ISL81601FRZ works together with the voltage loop to provide output current protection. It consists of a voltage divider and a current sense amplifier. When the output current of the DC to DC converter reaches the current limit set by the voltage divider, the error amplifier will be forced to maximum output voltage to reduce the duty cycle controller output voltage and limit the current.

The frequency loop of the ISL81601FRZ works together with the other two loops to provide improved load transient and output ripple behavior. It consists of a low-pass filter and an integrator. The output of the low-pass filter is compared to the DC level set by the integrator to generate a switching frequency control signal. The frequency loop also provides a level of compensation for the voltage loop to reduce overshoot and undershoot during fast load transients.
