The ISL83488IP is an electronically adjustable current-mode LED driver designed to control LED strings with constant current accuracy of ±1%. From the device side, LEDs are connected directly to the ISL83488IP driver with external current sink resistors set its output current that suit the LED strings impedances and electric characteristics. The current will remain constant over a wide range of input voltage from 4V to 36V, which makes it suitable for applications that are driven by AC mains or DC sources.

It does this by controlling the voltage and current. As the duty cycle (or on time) of the PWM signal rises, the current delivered to the LED increases, causing an increase in brightness.

Linear mode works by adjusting the reference voltage applied to the compensation pin of the ISL83488IP driver. When the reference voltage is increased, the output current is decreased which reduces the LED brightness. In Accurate Linear Mode, the device uses a two-byte PWM signal to effectively enable Intensity and Brightness bits, and enable users to achieve precision on/off as well as 0.25% PWM current control.

In addition to these control modes, the ISL83488IP also consists of built-in protection functions such as thermal shutdown and open loop protection, open-circuit shutdown protection and short-circuit protection. The open loop protection can reduce the output current if the device runs in open circuit conditions, providing protection against the wire break in the LED connect wires.

The ISL83488IP device comes with over-temperature protection and short-circuit protection features. The over-temperature protection feature will shut down the LED driver and triggers an active low thermal warning output when the operating temperature exceeds the set threshold temperature. The short-circuit protection feature will monitoring the power MOSFET and it will disable the drive when the current in the power MOSFET exceeds the pre-set level ensuring that the maximum power dissipation is not exceeded.
