ISL8488IP

The ISL8488IP is an integrated latest generation buck-boost LED driver from Intersil Corporation. It is optimized for enabling LED diodes to operate from buck-boost LED driver with an input voltage range from 6.5 V to 74 V for a wide variety of source voltages. This driver is capable of driving up to four strings of LEDs in a Series-Parallel configuration, enabling total output current of up to 1000 mA and voltage as low as 4 V with a wide range of output current resolutions from 500 mA to 100 mA, programmable from an external current sense resistor.

The ISL8488IP LED driver integrates a buck-boost converter with a floating low-side N-channel MOSFET and an integrated Schottky diode that obtains power from the input power rail. This power is converted by the buck-boost regulator to provide a constant output voltage to the LED strings. The MOSFET is used to accurately control the output current and prevent a large surge in the input current during startup.

The ISL8488IP is designed using Intersil’s fourth-generation True Colormizer® technology. This technology ensures an accurate and consistent white color throughout the output current range which eliminates the need for complex calibration and reduces the time and cost of development . The color point stability is maintained even when the input voltage changes, under varying temperature conditions.

The ISL8488IP is a highly integrated device with on-chip voltage regulator and programmable current sense amplifier. The device includes built-in protection features like thermal shutdown, input under-voltage lock out, output over-voltage protection, input/output clipping, and open LED detection. All of these functions are integrated on-chip and are user configurable via a serial bus.

The ISL8488IP is designed to meet a wide range of EMC requirements and is expected to provide high-resolution dimming, highly reliable operation and low thermal dissipation. This device is a proven solution for lighting applications such as external lighting, automotive lighting, and high brightness LED lighting.
