Digital Isolators - ISO7242ADWR application field and working principle
Digital isolators are designed to provide galvanic or electrical isolation between two circuits or domains, in order to ensure an uninterrupted flow of energy, either power or signal, between two entities that are electrically isolated. The ISO7242ADWR is one such component, and it is designed to transfer digital information from one segment to another while blocking any possible electrical signals. This type of isolator is designed for demanding digital signal transmissions.The ISO7242ADWR is part of a series of ADWR digital isolators manufactured by Texas Instruments. This device is a bi-directional, unidirectional isolator designed to provide data, power, and ground isolation in a variety of voltage, speed and current requirements. It can transmit up to 24 bits of data per channel in multiple combinations of data widths. The device also supports both single-ended and differential inputs on both sides. It can be used to transfer signals between two or more wire formats, PCBs or modules, while providing isolation between input and output terminals. It also can be used in differential transmission systems to reduce common-mode noise.The operating voltage of the device is typically between 1.8 and 5.5 volts. It is also designed to operate with a maximum speed of over 100 MB/s in any polarity. As a result, it can be used in many applications over a wide temperature range, from -40°C to +85°C. It is suitable for use in applications such as factory automation, wearables, hight temperature, and outdoor industrial control.The ISO7242ADWR works using galvanic isolation and data buffering techniques. When in typical operation, electrical signals from the input side are translated into a form which can be transmitted through air and then are electrically isolated from the receiving side; this results in the signal being buffered due to the physical barrier. The device also has a “Off State” in which the signals are blocked without buffering or isolating the signal. It also converts the incoming digital signals to a single-ended analog transmission which results in reduced noise.The galvanic isolation and data buffering helps protect the receiving side from any electrical noise or current transients present in the input signal, and also safeguards the input side from electrolytic corrosion or high static voltage. It also helps to improve the signal integrity by providing a consistent load across the system and reducing signal distortion.
