J113 Working Principle

In a JFET, the gate and the channel form a diode junction. When the gate voltage is set below the voltage of the source, a reverse biased diode between source and gate will be activated. The reverse bias diode turns off the channel, preventing the current flow. When the gate voltage is raised and set above the source voltage, the diode junction turns off, allowing the current to flow through the channel.The JFET is operated in the region between the pinch-off point (where the current is reduced to zero) and the back-to-back diode point (where the gate voltage is equal to the source voltage). The pinch-off point and the back-to-back diode point on the drain-source characteristic graph represent the maximum and minimum current, respectively, and determine the operating area of the JFET. The gate voltage can be used to adjust the current flowing between source and drain.
