JAN1N6073 is a silicon planar power rectifier designed for use in 50-1000V, 2A alternating current applications. This rectifier has various features, such as a low forward voltage drop, fast soft recovery time, and high surge capability. Furthermore, its hermetically sealed package guarantees a high reliability. The device is widely used in power supply rectification, UPS systems, inverters, and other high voltage applications.
Overview of Working Principle
The rectifier diode works in the same way as a switch, allowing current to flow in one direction only. When the diode is in reverse-biased voltage situation, its junction is analogous to a closed switch, no current will flow across the diode. When the diode is in a forward-biased state, its junction behaves as an open switch and allows current to flow. The JAN1N6073 rectifier comprises of four diodes connected in bridge configuration which provides the rectification for AC signals.
Detailed Working Principle
The JAN1N6073 is a four-junction device consisting of four diodes connected in a bridge configuration, as shown in the figure below. Adding two inductors and two capacitors in each side of the circuit forms a full wave rectifier. The inductors represent the AC input source, while the capacitors provide the smoothening of rectified current. When a positive voltage is applied to the input side of the bridge, two of the four diodes in the bridge turn on, allowing current to flow through the circuit and into the output side of the bridge. Similarly, a negative voltage on the input side of the bridge will turn on two of the other four diodes, allowing current to flow through the circuit and into the output side of the bridge.
The rectified waveform at the output of the bridge is a pulsed DC waveform, since, only when the diode is forward biased it allows a current to flow through the circuit. The positive and negative pulses in the output waveform depend on the amplitude and frequency of the applied AC input. Depending on the AC input signal, these pulses in the output waveform produce a pulsating DC voltage. This DC voltage can be smoothened using a filter capacitor, leaving a DC voltage at the output.
Limitation of Working Principle
The bridge rectifier using the JAN1N6073 suffers from certain limitations. The most significant limitation is the voltage drop across the four diodes. In bridge circuit using diodes for rectification, diode forward voltage drops affect the performance of entire circuit and this result in the reduction of output voltage. The higher voltage drops also increase the power loss and thereby reduces the efficiency of the entire circuit.
The other limitation of the JAN1N6073 is its limited capacitance of the switching diodes. This is the maximum current, beyond which the diode junction is not able to handle, and hence the diode gets damaged. Thus the maximum current rating of the JAN1N6073 is limited to a maximum of 2A.
