Thyristors are semiconductor devices that are used to switch high current and voltage applications. They provide very fast turn on and turn off times when compared to other semiconductor components. The DIAC, SIDAC and K1400S are all devices that belong to the Thyristor family. The DIAC (DIode AC switch) is two-terminal switch device used to initiate and control conduction in both directions by using a trigger voltage. When the trigger voltage is applied it causes both junctions of the device to become forward biased resulting in conduction in both directions. The DIAC is primarily used in triggered AC circuits like combustion ignitions, lamp starters and motor starters, to allow the turning on and off of an AC circuit.The SIDAC (Silicon Alternistor or Silicon Directed AC switch) is a bilateral three-terminal (anode, cathode, gate) switch device that functions in a similar way to the DIAC. It is usually used as an AC or DC voltage-controlled switch for triggering or switching an AC or DC load. The SIDAC does not require a pre-existing voltage, so it can be triggered by any voltage, unlike a DIAC. It is used in AC circuit switching, phase control circuits and in AC motor speed controllers. The K1400S is a thyristor device capable of switching more power than the DIAC and SIDAC. It is a three-terminal (anode, cathode, gate) device with a higher current and voltage rating than the DIAC and SIDAC, making it suitable for heavier-duty applications. The K1400S can be used for switching medium to high power AC loads, medium power motor starters, ignition systems, microwave ovens and in phase control circuits. It has a high-speed reverse-blocking capability, allowing it to block large currents in either voltage direction. The working principle of all three of these thyristor devices is the same. When a trigger voltage is applied, the device is turned on by biasing both the anode and cathode simultaneously. This causes current to flow in both directions, allowing the device to switch on or off an AC load. Once the load is switched, the device automatically reverts to its off-state. In conclusion, the DIAC, SIDAC and K1400S thyristors all belong to the same family of devices and are capable of switching AC and DC loads. They are all designed for different applications, with the K1400S able to switch heavier duty loads, due to its higher current and voltage ratings. They all follow the same working principle, with one trigger voltage turning them on and switching the load.
