The KA378R12CTU is a 3-terminal low dropout (LDO) linear Voltage Regulator with built-in reverse current protection, thermal shutdown, power-on reset, and current limiter, designed to maintain constant voltage on a 3-terminal fixed output voltage. It offers a wide operating current range up to 1 A and a wide input voltage range up to 20V, suitable for a variety of applications such as mobile phones, set-top boxes and automotive electronics.

Applications

The KA378R12CTU is ideal for segmented voltage regulation in applications such as portable electronics, automotive, industrial and instrumentation. This IC is used for low voltage output supply regulation and a wide range of input voltage, from 3.0V to 20V which best suits applications that require a variety of input sources. Due to its thermal shutdown circuit, reverse current protection and current limiter, KA378R12CTU can be used to protect downstream electronics in applications where noises or transients may occur.Additionally, KA378R12CTU devices can be used in smart energy meters, portable electronic products, and LED drivers which require high efficiency and demanding voltage conditions.

Working Principle

When an input voltage is supplied to the KA378R12CTU, the current flowing through it is first limited by the built-in current limiter circuit to avoid excessive heat dissipation in the IC.The internal temperature of the KA378R12CTU can be monitored by an internal thermal shutdown circuit which monitors the junction temperature of the IC. If the internal temperature of the IC exceeds the preset maximum limit, the thermal shutdown circuit will shut off the output voltage of the IC. The thermal shutdown circuit runs continuously and keeps the junction temperature of the IC below the maximum limit, allowing it to operate with low losses and high efficiency.An internal power-on reset circuit detects the initial current surge in the IC when power is applied and signals the IC to start-up properly. The maximum output voltage is preset internally and cannot be adjusted externally. However, external resistors can be used to adjust the current limit, providing an adjustable current limit. The flexible current limit range is possible because of the integrated NPN bipolar transistor current source.There are also two optional features available with the KA378R12CTU: a reverse current protection feature and a supercap discharge protection circuit. The reverse current protection circuit prevents current from flowing through the IC in the opposite direction when reverse voltage is applied. The supercap discharge protection circuit prevents current from flowing through the capacitor when power is removed. In summary, the KA378R12CTU is a low dropout linear Voltage Regulator which offers a wide input voltage range suitable for applications that require a variety of input sources. It also includes features such as reverse current protection, thermal shutdown, power-on reset, and current limiter which makes it suitable for a variety of applications.
