The KSZ8051RNL-EVAL is an evaluation and demonstration board and kit specifically designed for the KSZ8051RNL intelligent Ethernet single-chip physical layer transceiver from Micrel Inc. The kit provides a complete platform for evaluation and development of applications utilizing the KSZ8051RNL. It enables the user to evaluate and demonstrate the features, as well as, the functionality of the KSZ8051RNL. The evaluation board comes with a pre-programmed KSZ8051RNL that is connected to an RJ-45 connector and is designed to accommodate external 34-pin connectors for flexible connections to external transceivers or other devices such as video extenders or power line monitoring and control applications. The board also comes with a processor connected to the KSZ8051RNL via SPI and an external resistor-capacitor (RC) network to enable the user to measure the input voltage levels of the KSZ8051RNL.
The KSZ8051RNL is specifically designed for 10/100 Base-T applications utilizing RS-232 and a flexible industrial protocol. It offers integrated Wake-on-LAN support and supports five separate buffer descriptors for transmit and receive data and control packets. It also features multiple packet sizes, packet filtering, packet fragmentation, broadcast message control and RMON statistics (gathering and logging topology).
The KSZ8051RNL-EVAL is ideal for evaluation and demonstration of the advanced features of the KSZ8051RNL and is flexible enough to accommodate various configurations. Starting from the base of the board, the user can customize the kit with additional components and circuitry to analyze and/or extend the features and functions of the KSZ8051RNL. Examples of these components include an LCD display, an RCA video output connector, switches, LEDs, etc.
The major components of the KSZ8051RNL-EVAL include the KSZ8051RNL, switches, and an RJ-45 connector to enable direct connection to a network. The device contains two National Semiconductor SC1101 transceivers that enable the data to be transceiver from one transceiver to another. The RJ-45 receptacle on the board connects to the outside world via an Ethernet cable.
On the board, there is a reset circuit that controls the KSZ8051RNL chip. This circuit causes the chip to reset when power is applied to it, and is also used to keep the chip in a low power mode when it is not being used. The rest of the circuitry on the board is connected to the SC1101 transceivers and the reset circuit to enable the user to evaluate the various features of the KSZ8051RNL.
The board provides the user with access to the KSZ8051RNL’s registers, giving the user full visibility and control of the operation of the transceiver. The board also features an I2C bus for the connection to additional components such as sensors or memory devices. Furthermore, the board can be used to connect to additional transceivers, such as a video extender, an Ethernet switch, or a power line monitoring system, to further extend the capabilities of the KSZ80715RNL-EVAL.
The KSZ8051RNL-EVAL also has onboard LED indicators that indicate when the transceiver is transmitting or receiving data, and when it has detected a collision. Additionally, the board includes an on-board jumper that can be used to connect the reset circuit to an external signal source, and a power input jack that can be used to provide the board with power.
The board also includes an integrated system clock, which can be used to measure the speed of the KSZ8051RNL transceiver. Additionally, The board includes a driver circuit which automatically adjusts the voltage level of the KSZ8051RNL transceiver when it is connected to an Ethernet network.
