The KSZ8463MLI is a single-chip MAC/PHY compatible with IEEE 802.3/u/ab standards for Ethernet. It includes a powerful, energy-efficient triple-speed PHY and an enhanced A/D controller for integrated point-to-point links. The KSZ8463MLI's integrated 8-bit single-cycle PHY can process 10Base-T, 100Base-T, and 1000Base-T Ethernet signals, while its Analogue/Digital controller enables very low power consumption. Ideal for a wide range of applications, the KSZ8463MLI is used in a variety of network systems and interface designs.
The KSZ8463MLI has 10/100/1000 Base Ethernet compatibility with an unbalanced input signal and an output signal. This Ethernet interface supports 10/100/1000 Base-T media types and auto-sensing of link speed and duplex capability. It also supports auto negotiation and auto-detection of device type and primary PHY. The interface includes 16K and 64K receive FIFOs for both half/full duplex operation, as well as signal polarity reversal for both transmitted and received signals.
The KSZ8463MLI allows for easy integration into various interface designs. Its integrated signal processing algorithms detect cable integrity and link speed and link status changes instantly. In addition, when used in a Power over Ethernet (PoE) application, the KSZ8463MLI is able to detect the supported voltage level and select the most appropriate operating level. This eliminates the need for manually selecting different operating levels, thus reducing design complexity.
The working principle of the KSZ8463MLI is based on a concept called MAC (Media Access Control). The MAC is responsible for controlling the flow of data or information through a network. This Ethernet interface uses a request/grant protocol to handle the access of data from different attached devices. Data transmission is carried out on the basis of Ethernet frames, which are sent in cyclic order. The MAC controller cross references the frames and allows for simultaneous transmissions to multiple destinations.
The KSZ8463MLI has a single-wire pulse width modulation (PWM) output mode which can be used to control external switching elements. The PWM can be used to optimize power efficiency and point-to-point link performance. In addition, the KSZ8463MLI supports an optional sleep mode that reduces power consumption when the device is in use but connected to a non-participating link. The sleep mode is programmable and can be used in battery-powered or low power designs.
The KSZ8463MLI provides 8 independent RX/TX MAC channels. Each of these channels supports a different media speed and type, thus allowing for dynamic data rate configurations. The customizable Digital and Analogue filters, combined with the single-wire PWM output, enable maximum flexibility for system designers in the network application environment.
The KSZ8463MLI is a powerful and versatile Ethernet interface perfect for a variety of applications including PoE, Ethernet switch/Router Data Plane, WLAN Access Points, Ethernet Security Devices and other Ethernet-based systems.
