KSZ8841-16MBLI application field and working principle

The KSZ8841-16MBLI is an 8-bit single-chip micro-controller with an embedded Ethernet physical layer (PHY) interface. It is designed to be used as a cost-effective network interface for applications such as factory automation, low-end printers, robotics and embedded solutions.

The KSZ8841-16MBLI provides an embedded 10/100 Mbps Ethernet PHY interface with an 8-bit/16-bit external bus interface. It supports 5 LEDs (Link, Activity, Collision, Full Duplex and Speed) and is capable of automatically responding to IEEE2560 frames. The PHY offers a built-in energy saving function that reduces power consumption without sacrificing the performance of the Ethernet connection.

The KSZ8841-16MBLI can be used to bridge multiple segments of wired networks, or interface to various devices such as sensors, industrial controllers, and security systems. It supports auto-negotiation and auto-crossover functions, allowing the user to configure the device easily without any software. It supports both full duplex and half duplex modes, and offers an innovative statistical multiplexing mechanism for increasing throughput in case of large packet transfers.

The KSZ8841-16MBLI is based on the IEEE 802.3u specification. It provides a flexible packet processing engine, which is designed to be programmable and can be customized via the embedded configuration interface. The device supports an array of Ethernet frames such as TCP, UDP, ICMP and other protocols. The KSZ8841-16MBLI also supports 802.1Q virtual LANs (VLANs) allowing multiple virtual networks to be created and managed on the same physical interface. It supports 4K MAC address entries and 4K address filter entries in addition to IPv4 / IPv6 checksum offload and automated pause frames. It includes 8 independent DMA engines for efficient frame transmission and reception. It supports error, collision and flow control, as well as all of the features found in conventional Ethernet PHYs.
