KSZ8893FQL Application Field and Working Principle
KSZ8893FQL is a Fast Ethernet PHY transceiver designed primarily for Ethernet-to-shared media applications, including USB and radio systems. Its enhanced features include support for IEEE 802.3u Physical Layer (PHY) auto-negotiation and IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE). The transceiver supports RJ-45 (RJ-45) magnetic modules, and is an ideal choice to interface with a microcomputer or other controller type MCU or ASIC (application specific integrated circuit).
The KSZ8893FQL provides a complete, low pin count and cost effective solution for interfacing 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet) systems to Ethernet networks. It supports a variety of interfaces, such as 10/100 Mbps PHY transceiver and the built-in 802.3 Standard Media Independent Interface (MII). The transceiver also supports various optional functions, such as auto-negotiation flow control and PoE.
Basic operating principle of KSZ8893FQL: the PHY layer transceiver is responsible for the serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial conversion of the incoming and outgoing data. The signal received from the Ethernet MAC (media access control) interface is converted to a format compatible with the Media Dependent Interface (MDI) to which the transceiver is connected. In addition, the Ethernet MAC interface also transmits signal via MDI. The PHY layer transceiver also performs signal stress detection/correction and control functions.
In addition to signal transmission, the PHY layer transceiver performs necessary control and signalling functions, such as signal auto-negotiation, flow control and auto-deactivation of unused devices. Auto-negotiation is the process by which the PHY layer transceiver and the Ethernet switch agree on network configuration. This allows the system to configure itself automatically when the connection is established. The PHY layer transceiver also knows when to de-activate unused devices, saving power and time.
The KSZ8893FQL supports a variety of Ethernet-compliant features, such as Wake On LAN (WOL), 802.1x authentication and routed bridging. Routed bridging allows the data to be routed or switched from one node to another, allowing for improved bandwidth utilization. The PHY layer transceiver supports IEEE 802.3-compliant Auto-Negotiation andauto-mdix (auto-MDI/MDI-X features).
