Temperature Sensors - PTC ThermistorsA positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor, also known as a positive temperature coefficient resistor, is a PTC thermistor that exhibits a qualitatively similar behavior, in which the resistance increases with increasing temperature. PTC thermistors are used in a variety of applications, such as temperature measurement, rapid shutdown of circuits, over temperature protection, and temperature compensation.KTY81,112 or simply KTY81 is a NTC (~ -3 % / K) thermistor family quickly becoming popular for use in electronic circuits for temperature measurement applications due to its high accuracy, fast response time and wide temperature range. Unlike PTC thermistors, NTC thermistors are temperature-sensitive devices whose resistance decreases with increasing temperature. KTY81 is a NTC thermistor with a negative temperature sensitivity of -3.5%/K and the resistance of it at 25°C is 221 Ohm. It is used to measure temperatures from 0°C — 200°C with a high accuracy of 0.5°C and fast response time of 1.4 sec at 25°C. Furthermore, it features a very low thermal inertia.KTY81 and KTY82 are both manufactured using a helical ceramic grain structure which improves the linearity and temperature stability of the thermistor. KTY81 typically has a lower resistance at 25°C, while KTY82 has a higher resistance. KTY81/221,112 is the designation for a KTY81 thermistor with an initial resistance of 221 Ohm at 25°C and -3.5 %/K temperature coefficient. This thermistor is ideal for applications such as engine temperature monitoring, air conditioning temperature control, automotive fuel level measurement and differential temperature measurement.The main working principle of the KTY81/221,112 is based on the principle of thermistance. A thermistor is a temperature sensitive resistor, the resistance of which decreases as the temperature increases. At a given temperature, the resistance of the thermistor is measured and the result is used to calculate the temperature. PTC thermistors are more commonly used for temperature sensing applications because of their high accuracy, linearity and fast response time.The KTY81/221,112 is a very accurate and reliable temperature sensing device which can be used to accurately measure temperatures from 0°C to 200°C.
