KX220-1071 Application Field and Working Principle
The KX220-1071 is a motion sensor used widely in consumer electronics and industrial applications, classified as an ultralow g triaxial accelerometer. Developed on cutting edge MEMS technology, this accelerometer can accurately measure the orientation and acceleration of a device with three axes (dividing it into X, Y, and Z) and detect finely tuned movements with far greater sensitivity than traditional gyroscopes. But performance comes in a tiny package; this miniature accelerometer measures in at only 2x2x2 mm³ while still achieving a sensitivity of 0.01 g.
The possibilities offered by such a device are endless. By combining the information gathered by the accelerometer with that of other sensors – such as a compass, GPS, or gyroscope – applications can be created that are able to give real-time orientation and tilt information. This is especially useful in industrial applications that require delicate measurements and angles, such as robotic arms or camera cranes.
But the applications don’t end there. The KX220-1071 is also used heavily in mobile devices where the integrated accelerometer is essential in allowing the user to interact with the device via gestures, such as tilting the phone to landscape mode. It is also used in augmented reality applications, such as Google Lens, where the accelerometer can detect the user’s device orientation and can auto-adjust the view accordingly.
The KX220-1071’s working principle can be explained in simple terms. It consists of a small mass suspended by tiny springs inside the device’s MEMS chip. This mass is kept in the center of the chip’s chamber by the springs. When acceleration is applied, the mass is displaced from its original position due to the acceleration and the force of inertia, thus compressing the springs. When the acceleration stops, the spring reverts to its original shape, pushing the mass back to the original position.
This displacement of the mass is detected by a capacitive circuit that measures the capacitance between a pair of electrodes surrounding the mass. The more the mass is displaced, the more capacitance is measured, thus revealing the magnitude of the acceleration applied to the device. Since the magnitude of a force is a vector quantity, the accelerometer is able to calculate acceleration with all three axes (since the force acts in all three direction).
In summary, the KX220-1071 is a miniature and highly sensitive accelerometer ideal for use in consumer electronics, industrial, and augmented reality applications. Its small form factor and advanced MEMS technology allows it to measure acceleration with all three axes with great accuracy, while still conserving power. The accelerometer works by sensing the displacement of a tiny mass in response to an applied forces, measuring the resulting change in capacitance.
