PMIC - Motor Drivers, Controllers are devices for controlling motors for various applications. In electronic automation and process control, motor driver circuits have been developed to enable easier control of motors and other power devices. The L297D is one such motor driver developed and consists of several blocks and pins that lets it to drive, control and monitor DC brushed motors and stepper motors.

The L297D is an integrated high current chopper placed on logic tristate gate, protected output, velocity/position/torque control logic and current sense amplifier circuit. It is available in 16-pin DIP vertical-mount package. This enclosed, slaved driver includes both a high current bridge driver and associated microprocessor control circuitry.

The motor driver’s application fields includes automation systems, positioning systems, medical equipment and robotics. With its high torque and current capacity, the L297D motor driver can conveniently be used in high power applications. Working with a micro-controller such as the 8086, 808X, 8051, 6811 or their derivatives, the device is ideal for controlling motors for various maneuvers.

The basic blocks of the L297D include a logic interface, 2 high current power bridges, built-in microprocessor reset control circuitry, an oscillator, protection circuits, adjustable current sense amplifier, current sense protection and 5-bit digital comparator. All these blocks are connected by 6 bits. The oscillator can be adjusted to frequencies ranging from 200Hz to 25kHz and will be used to control the power bridges which provide the control signals and power to the motor.

Further, the protection circuits connected to the device are used for the power bridges and for the logic for the device’s safety. It contains a built-in current sense amplifier that becomes active when the output current from each bridge exceeds the set programmed values. The amplifier will be disabled when the current falls below the set programmed levels.

The L297D also contains a 5-bit digital comparator with feedbacK. Through this, the device’s behaviour depends on the logic levels of the logic inputs A0, A1, A2, A3 and A4 which can be set according to the requirements of the application, thus supplying a wide range of parameters to control the motor.

The logic input A0 will determine the direction and logic input A1 will determine the motion, while the A2 and A3 are the position control inputs, while the A4 will be used to control the type of control. The A2 and A3 logic levels will also set the slew rate of the control signal depending upon the inputted logic levels.

The L297D also includes a current sense amplifier which can be used to detect the out-of-control motor currents. If the current from the power bridge exceeds a certain level, the amplifier will get disabled and if the current decreases, it will again get enabled.

The L297D is a very powerful, fast and versatile device for controlling motors for any kind of application. It is designed in such a manner that it can be suitably tailored for different applications, through its control logic and microprocessor control circuitry. As a result, it is one of the most preferred choices in many motor control applications.
