L297D013TR is a pocket motor driver of STMicroelectronics that is designed to drive DC or stepper motors at constant speed. It is equipped with various embedded features like overvoltage protection, current limitation, load fault in stepper motor, motor stall detection, adjustable acceleration and deceleration. These features make it suitable for many advanced applications such as HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), home appliances and white goods, security and telecom systems, POS systems and robotics. The L297D013TR consists of a full H-bridge driver integrated with a serial peripheral interface (SPI) compatible controller. The SPI allow the bridge driver to accept one data byte at a time for commanding the motor movement. The byte is programmed using the specific command as well as a 16-bit enhanced pulse width modulation (PWM) interface. The PWM configures the motor\'s speed, acceleration, deceleration, torque and frequency. The device uses three external PWM signals to direct the H-bridge to the desired direction and pulses. The motor driver supports two motor types, namely DC and stepper motor, and two types of motor control, open loop and closed loop.

The motor driver is powered by two separate power sources, one for the logic and one for the motor. Its operating voltage is 5V to 40V, allowing it to draw less power and offer optimal performance. The device generates current limits to protect the motor from overload. It is also equipped with an overvoltage protection feature to protect the chip from potential damages by blocking off the voltage to the mechanics. The device also includes a load fault in stepper motor, motor stall detection and adjustable acceleration and deceleration options.

In closed loop mode, the L297D013TR features an analogue input to sense the speed of the motor and compare it to the programmed speed references.
